Interviews for Leeds United’s vacant under-21 manager position continue as Jesse Marsch looks for someone capable of carrying his philosophy to the top of the academy. Andrew Taylor has returned to his loans manager position after guiding what was the under-23s through Mark Jackson’s redeployment.
Jackson has signed a new contract to remain a part of Marsch’s first-team backroom staff, but the role he left remains unfilled. Director of football Victor Orta and academy manager Adam Underwood have been chairing the interviews, but Marsch is at the heart of the decision-making process.
“Victor and Adam Underwood have been having quite a few interviews,” he said. “I’m aware with everything and I’m in touch with what’s going on there.

“We have some really good candidates and it’s going to be really important we get someone that can really help put in place the philosophy and the playing style.”
Marsch has restructured his backroom staff this summer. Frankie Schiemer, his long-term confidant and colleague, has stepped back from the frontline. The Austrian has taken on a wide-reaching consultancy role with the club, which Marsch considers to be hugely important in the steps forward the club takes under his vision. He said: “Frankie’s role is going to be more as a consultant.
“He will be here sometimes, but he will also be watching a lot of video from training, from games, from first team, from the 21s, from the academy. So he’s going to play a big role in the entire club, not just with the first team, but he will still be important to me and what we’re doing with the first team.”
There were two other appointments made last week too. Pierre Barrieu and Ewan Sharp have each worked with Marsch in the past.
“Pierre Barrieu will come in to be a fitness coach and performance analyst, so we’re excited to have his expertise,” said Marsch. “Ewan, he last came from his time with Man U, he worked with me in New York, he understands me very clearly, the philosophy I want to play and he’s an on-the-field coach, but also a video analyst.”
Marsch confirmed there was likely to be one more coaching appointment this summer too, aside from the under-21 position.
