Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard has reportedly been left ‘dismayed’ with Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick after he was overlooked for a farewell in what could be his final appearance at Old Trafford.
The England international was left on the bench by Rangnick for the 3-0 victory against Brentford, whilst a few other potential departees having been granted the opportunity to wave goodbye to supporters.
Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata were both handed a place in the starting line-up - each of the midfielders set to draw a close to their United careers at the end of the campaign. Meanwhile, Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani was also allowed the opportunity to say goodbye to the Red Devils with his own deal also set to come to an end.
Lingard was left on the sidelines though - a decision that has seemingly upset a number of those within his personal camp. According to the Manchester Evening News, the player himself was left ‘upset’ at his role within the game, especially when Cavani was called upon ahead of him.
It means that the 29-year-old was not granted the opportunity to say a formal farewell to Old Trafford - with his last appearance at the stadium coming in the 3-2 victory against Norwich City in April. Meanwhile, Lingard’s brother Louie Scott took to Instagram to slam Rangnick’s decision to leave the forward on the bench.
He wrote: "20 years of blood sweat and tears, four domestic trophies, three cup final goals, not even a farewell. No wonder it's Conference League next year.
Which club do you think should sign Lingard? Have your say in the comments below.
“Attacking players for celebrations when the club's being sold to the super league OK. Class of '92, Busby Babes, you're ran by people who don't even know the offside trap.
Classless and the fans need to realise. Goodnight, godbless! Been there since nine years of age and didn't even get a send-off!!! Well done bro your family are proud."
The latest development brings a sour end to Lingard’s hugely successful spell with Manchester United. After progressing through the club’s famed youth academy, he was sent on four separate loan spells before being rewarded with a place in the first-team.
He has gone on to make 232 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and scored 35 goals including strikes in the FA Cup and League Cup finals. It remains to be seen where his future lies following his exit from Old Trafford.
West Ham United have regularly been linked after Lingard’s hugely impressive loan spell at the London Stadium last term. Leicester City, Everton and Aston Villa have most recently been rumoured to be considering a move for the forward, whilst Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan have been credited with an interest.
Despite having not managed to say goodbye at Old Trafford, Lingard will certainly be hoping to make an appearance over United’s final two games of the season against Brighton and Crystal Palace away from home.
