Jesse Lingard explains why Man United must keep Michael Carrick

  • Former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard has backed his ex-teammate Michael Carrick to stay in the Old Trafford dugout beyond this season.
  • Carrick was brought in to replace Ruben Amorim in January, and has since led United up to third in the Premier League table, with the Red Devils in prime position to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
  • Lingard, who is now playing his football for Corinthians in Brazil, told BBC Sport that United have come on “leaps and bounds” since Carrick returned to the club at the start of the year.
  • Lingard has called for United’s hierarchy to back Carrick by giving him a new contract as he feels the club is “really on the right track with Michael”.
  • Ex-England international Lingard added that Carrick has “got that Manchester United DNA inside of him” and that “he knows the ins and outs of the club”, which he believes will hold him in good stead moving forwards if he is named as United’s next long-term manager.
