Jerry Rosburg’s contract expired, but he ‘may be back’ with Broncos

We knew Jerry Rosburg was not a favorite to become the Denver Broncos’ next head coach, but we did not expect the news that dropped Wednesday evening.

Field Yates of ESPN reported that “[w]hile the Broncos are still searching for a head coach, interim head coach Jerry Rosburg has been let go and will not be a part of the coaching staff going forward,” citing a source.

It seems that Yates was either given incorrect information, or the information was not supposed to get out, because the notion that Rosburg will not have an opportunity to remain with the team was quickly rebutted.

About an hour after Yate’s initial report, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that “Rosburg was part of a procedural move to terminate with an expiring contract,” but he is still in contention to remain on staff under the team’s next head coach.

About thirty minutes later, Mike Klis chimed in to report that while Rosburg’s contract expired on Wednesday, the door is “not shut” on a potential return to the team in some capacity.

So Rosburg’s contract has expired and he seems unlikely to become the next head coach, but it would be premature to say with certainty that he will not be part of the team’s coaching staff in 2023.

Rosburg went 1-1 as an interim coach with the Broncos in 2022.
