As news of how the Dallas Cowboys plan to rebound in 2023 continues to bubble up, Jerry Jones and friends are starting to discuss what’s to come in the fall. After already professing Mike McCarthy may coach Dallas as long as the legendary Tom Landy — mind you, after another embarrassing playoff exit — Jones’ latest declaration for the Cowboys might be even more inexplicable.
On Wednesday, Jones revealed that Mike McCarthy would start to implement a variation of the offense he once used with the Green Bay Packers with the Cowboys. This news comes after the revelation that former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore wouldn’t return next season and that McCarthy would have greater involvement in play-calling. (Moore has since joined the Los Angeles Chargers in the same role.)
Never mind the seemingly endless slants, flat-routes, and sluggos in the passing game, does Jones not remember what happened with McCarthy in Green Bay? You know, when the Packers’ outdated offense grew stagnant, particularly in 2017 and 2018, while they won 13 games total, as McCarthy was eventually fired? No?
Welp, maybe someone should relay the news:
Jerry Jones said Mike McCarthy will call the plays and a version of the offenses he ran in Green Bay will be coming to Dallas.

As Jones gives McCarthy his blessing to sink his teeth further into the Cowboys, it’s worth noting their offense isn’t exactly broken. Sure, their team DVOA efficiency at No. 15 overall could’ve been better in 2022, but this was still the league’s fourth-highest scoring team (27.5 points per game) in the regular season.
What the Cowboys actually and more likely need is more weapons in the passing game, especially someone who could complement CeeDee Lamb. Changing up a scheme that otherwise seemed fine to one the league already more or less figured out doesn’t seem wise. But then again, nothing Jones or McCarthy think of these days seems bright, does it?
NFL fans were flabbergasted by the idea of Mike McCarthy bringing his Packers offense to Dallas

McCarthy is a good coach but I can’t imagine his offense having a lot of success anymore, and especially that roster. Assuming he’s going to tweak it obviously, but the philosophy of a static offense asking your guys to win 1 on 1 consistently seems dated https://t.co/nPY29uRi9K

I don’t like this. At all. https://t.co/bVZJBlSFIr

The only way this makes ANY sense over Kellen Moore is if you believe that this offense is somehow intrinsically better for Dak Prescott's personal play than Moore's offense.
And it's hard to see why you would. https://t.co/klpnMs3q6K
