Jerry Jones Reveals Cowboys Were Hoping to Draft Jalen Hurts Back in 2020

The future of Dak Prescott with the Cowboys has made headlines in recent days following the club’s surprising trade for former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.

It appears that the acquisition of Lance may have never come to fruition if the team had landed one of the league’s best young signal-caller’s back in the 2020 NFL Draft.

While addressing the team’s decision to give up fourth round draft capital for Lance, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shockingly revealed that the team was interested in drafting Jalen Hurts had he potentially fallen several rounds further in the draft.

"I think had we been able to draft him [Lance] with next year’s four, the kind of talent he was in this draft, like I just told you, two years ago, we were looking at Philadelphia quarterback [Jalen Hurts],” said Jones.

In 2020, Dallas grabbed CeeDee Lamb in the first round followed by standout cornerback Trevon Diggs with pick No. 51 in the second round. Several picks later, the Eagles drafted Hurts with pick No. 53.

“But looking at him, had he fallen to us there we would have drafted him. It is our plan when we can but it very seldom happens to have someone of high enough quality to be there at the right place with our draft pick. And this one worked [Lance] and so we're excited about it," added Jones.”

While all eyes are focused on how the Lance trade will impact Prescott’s future with the club, if Dallas had landed Hurts, the NFC East as well as the entire NFL landscape would look completely different.
