Jerod Mayo shares thoughts on Matthew Judon’s contract uncertainty

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo kept it real when asked about Matthew Judon and his desire for a new contract.

Judon has been very vocal about wanting a new deal. He has also made it clear he wants to be with the team, as he enthusiastically took the field when training camp practices started earlier this week.

It’s been one of the biggest storylines to come out of training camp, especially as Judon’s teammates continue to get new deals. For instance, safety Jabrill Peppers agreed to a three-year extension with the team on Friday.

“We’re still kind of working through that stuff,” Mayo said, per a team-provided transcript, via NESN.com’s Keagan Stiefel. “Judon is a huge piece of the puzzle. He’s another guy who brings leadership, he brings obviously the playmaking ability, but also just that energy of wanting to go out there and dominate the man across from him.

“Hopefully we get something done. He understands the business side of it as well. Hopefully he understands that we really like him. We really like him as a player and as a person and want him here.”

There’s hope that a deal will get done soon considering Judon has been one of the key pieces for the Patriots defense for the last three seasons.

On Friday, he snagged a pick-six on rookie quarterback Drake Maye during training camp practice. It’s clear Judon wants to stay in New England, but it’ll ultimately come down to the Patriots’ front office to ensure that happens.
