New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo refused to comment on a report that several players on offense were “smiling and laughing” in the locker room after their 34-15 blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins.
It came after the defense completely wilted against the Dolphins’ receiving weapons, and the offense was overcome with penalties and poor pass protection. Rationalizing a joking nature after such a poor performance would be tough for New England.
However, Mayo is standing firm that everyone in the locker room was down after the loss.
“I don’t question any of that stuff as far as the players taking a butt-kicking like that personally,” Mayo told media members on Monday. “Everyone in that locker room, we were down. Now, I’m not sure what that report is, but I’m not going to talk about that. I know the guys were disappointed.”
After the game, rookie quarterback Drake Maye expressed how much he hates losing when speaking to media members.
Creating a winning culture is all about getting the players to buy in and care about outcomes regardless of what their record looks like. The Patriots are sitting at 3-9 with no real hope of postseason contention, but that doesn’t mean they stop fighting.
If players were smiling and laughing after a loss, the team might have bigger problems than wide receiver and offensive line fixes.
