New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo gave a strong endorsement of Drake Maye when fielding media questions on his decision to make the rookie the starting quarterback.
Maye saw game action in New England’s Week 3 matchup with the New York Jets. He went 4-of-8 passing for 22 yards on one drive late in the fourth quarter.
The Patriots have struggled to get anything going in the passing attack this season. They are currently ranked last in the NFL with 119.4 passing yards per game.
Mayo broke down why Maye was selected as the starter, as transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
“Drake gives us the best chance to win, now and going forward,” Mayo said. “He’s been getting better every single week, and as I said before, at the end of training camp he was trending at a very high rate. That has continued through the early part of the season.”
It will certainly be an exciting time for Patriots fans, as they get to see the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft in action. The Mac Jones era fell flat in New England, but there’s hope that things will be different with Maye under center.
