Football pundit and One Show host Jermaine Jenas has been fined more than £2,000 and banned from driving for six months for speeding and texting while at the wheel.

The former Spurs and England midfielder, 39, was pulled over by police in October last year when an officer spotted him holding his phone while driving his Range Rover.

Jenas was pictured at the roadside while being quizzed by a Metropolitan Police officer, and admitted breaking the law by using his mobile to text.

He ran into further trouble in March when Hertfordshire Police caught him breaking a 50mph speed limit at 65mph on the M25.

Jenas pleaded guilty to both offences and was sentenced at Willesden magistrates’ court earlier this month to a six-month driving ban, a £660 fine for using his phone while driving, and a £1,410 fine for speeding.

In evidence submitted to the court, Pc Neil Cornelius said he was on patrol at 3.20pm on October 14 last year when he spotted Jenas’ Range Rover in Marsh Lane, Stanmore.

“I noticed that the driver of this vehicle was using a handheld mobile device whilst driving,” he said. “The device was being held in both their hands.”

Jenas, who lives in Arkley in north London, pleaded guilty to the mobile phone offence in June and had been expected to be sentenced on October 19.

However the court hearing was quietly moved forward by a week.

Court records show he was caught speeding between junction 24 and 23 of the M25 in Hertfordshire at 2.07pm on March 4 while driving the same Range Rover. He pleaded guilty to that offence at court on October 12.

The former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa player, who scored 39 goals in 341 league appearances, was ordered to settle the court debts by November 9.

He was handed six penalty points and a driving ban for the mobile phone offence and a further three points for speeding. Jenas was ordered to pay a £141 victim surcharge and £90 in costs.
