Jeremy Vine causes fiery debate with shocking video of cyclist and car colliding

Jeremy Vine sparked a furious debate when he shared a video of a cyclist colliding with a car on a zebra crossing.

The TV and radio presenter, who is an advocate for cycling, posted a video on Twitter of two cars seemingly ignoring a cyclist in Bradford, with the rider getting clipped by a second vehicle as he rides through a zebra crossing.

In the 11 second clip, a cyclist dressed in black, and using a black bike, rides over the crossing, with one car not slowing down as they pass him, and another clipping him as they drive past, as the rider loses balance, but does not fall to the ground.

The cyclist then continues on the crossing, but this time on foot, holding the handles of his bike.

The BBC Radio 2 presenter shared the short clip, and wrote: "Horton Grange Road, West Yorkshire. How does the driver fail to see him?"

His tweet, which has been liked more than 2,200 times, sparked much debate between Jeremy's followers, with some shocked at the drivers, but others pointing out the cyclist should have got off his bike to get across, as the Highway Code instructs.

One follower wrote: "Granted that's shocking driving but why is he on a pedestrian crossing? You either want to be a road user as a cyclist or a pedestrian, you can't have both, cyclists that use the road and pavement depending on which is clearer really p***es me off."

Another said: "He is not a pedestrian. Vehicles of any description should not be using pedestrian crossings. In the case of a bicycle, the rider should dismount if it wants to use one. No need to thank me."

One person wrote: "You don’t need to give way to cyclists on pedestrian crossings. I’m a cyclist btw."

Jeremy replied asking how many they had run over, to which the Twitter user clarified "none".

A fourth person said: "Surely the cyclist should have stopped and waited for it to be safe to cross? Same as if it was me as a pedestrian?"

Another just simply said: "Crossings are for pedestrians!!"

One person replied to Jeremy: "He doesn't fail to see him, the driver sees he is cycling on a zebra crossing so automatically in the little mind of some drivers that translates to he's not a person anymore and any empathy ceases to exist."

One social media user, said of the responses to Jeremy's tweet: "I’d like to say the responses to this are astonishing, sadly they’re exactly what I would expect.

Jeremy's recent tweet has sparked a fiery debate (PA)

"In what world is it right for a car to smash into anything on a zebra crossing, irrespective of whether it’s right or wrong to be on the crossing."

Jeremy is known for documenting interactions between cyclists and drivers.

Last month he shared a video of himself being confronted by an angry Bentley driver on a road in Kensington.
