Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt will today deliver his first full Spring budget since taking over the role in October 2022.
In an attempt to solve the financial chaos caused by former Prime Minister Liz Truss, Mr Hunt is expected to announce that the energy bills that were frozen at £2,500 a year will be extended for another three months.
He is also expected to make a number of other changes, including an expansion of childcare support for parents of children in the age bracket one to two-year-olds.
However, taxpayers are unlikely to let this overshadow the fact that Mr Hunt previously splashed out £44,000 of taxpayer cash on a toilet and shower for his penthouse office.
Mr Hunt, who is not expected to announce tax cuts today, was previously questioned about the massive expenditure for his private bathroom in 2017, as the then-health minister had only recently called for £22billion of cuts to be made to the NHS by 2020.
The politician had asked for the suite so he could freshen up after cycling to work when travelling to the £25million Health Ministry headquarters in central London's Victoria. However, his reasoning caused confusion because the office already had showers for staff in the basement near the bike racks.
The refurbishment consisted of a bathroom with floor-to-ceiling slate tiles and sensor-activated lights at the his new office at the Department of Health.
The multi-millionaire's 15ft by 8ft suite boasted lava tiles, vanity mirrors, recessed lighting, a designer toilet and a power shower.
In addition, it had a lighting system which was wired with sensors so they would automatically switch on when he walked in.
Despite claims Mr Hunt demanded the new bathroom for his own use, the then-health secretary soon took to Twitter to set the record straight, as he saw it.
He wrote: "TRUE I requested shower for long dist cyclists in new Dept Health offices (as in current office) [sic].
"FALSE it was for my own use. My cycle 2work only 10 mins so no need 2 'freshen up' as story elegantly says. But let's encourage cyclists! [sic]"
Following the claims, then-Chair of the Labour Party Ian Lavery told The Sun: "It is outrageous that Jeremy Hunt, who has overseen an average real term cut of 14% in nurses' pay, is spending £44,000 on a ministerial bathroom."
John O'Connell, of the TaxPayers' Alliance, added: "It is an absurd amount to spend when the building already has perfectly adequate facilities."
Mr Hunt's department said at the time: "The Health Secretary has not approved any costs relating to the department's new building, but has requested facilities for all cyclists and runners in line with those the department currently has."
Following this, Mr Hunt ordered an "immediate review of all the costs" related to the new building.
