Tory ministers are set on a crackdown on 'outrageous' wastes of public money, while seeking billions of pounds in tax hikes and savings - with Jeremy Hunt warning that he will be playing Scrooge in next week's Autumn Budget.
The Chancellor has promised a 'rabbit-free' statement centred around delivering 'certainty' to families and businesses across the UK, in the wake of a market turmoil sparked by Kwasi Kwarteng's £45billion tax-cutting extravaganza.
It is thought that Hunt is considering a range of avenues to address a 'black hole' in public finance, inclusive of an extended freeze on income tax and national insurance thresholds. And while Mr Hunt has warned that 'horrible decisions' will be made on tax and spending, ministers will also be seeking savings through 'rooting out waste'.
