Former Celtic standout Jeremie Frimpong is on a five-man transfer shortlist as Barcelona step up their crusade for a new right-back, according to a report.
Xavi is desperate for a new option to compete with Ronald Araujo, who is more accustomed to starting in central defence. USA international Sergino Dest was left out of the squad for Saturday's 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano. And now Bayer Leverkusen's Frimpong headlines Barcelona's options after Cesar Azpilicueta decided to stick with Chelsea.
A switch to the Nou Camp would reinforce the rapid rise of Frimpong who joined Bayer Leverkusen for £9.75m in January 2021 – as former club Manchester City landed a sizeable sell-on fee. And now Celtic are in line for another windfall as it's understood his move to the Bundesliga big boys included a cast-iron sell-on fee, similar to the ones agreed upon Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney's exits.
And now Spanish transfer specialist Gerard Romero claims Frimpong is joined by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Thomas Meunier and Juan Foyth on Xavi's wishlist. But the Netherlands U21 international could fit the bill as his attacking instincts appear a natural fit for the way the Spanish football legend wants to play.
The 21-year-old has featured in both of Leverkusen's Bundesliga matches – a pair of defeats to Dortmund and Augsburg as the Champions League regulars stumble out the blocks.
