Adding to a long line of celebrity alcohol products, Jennifer Lopez has decided it's time to launch her own product. Her new cocktail brand release did not come without stirring up some controversy.
Delola is a spritzer cocktail drink which Lopez said has lower calories and natural flavours. Plus, its gluten free. What would there be to hate? Well, some fans seem to think that Lopez releasing this drink is totally hypocritical to the lifestyle she endorses. She's maintained for a few years that she doesn't drink.
In fact, she told InStyle in 2018 that she doesn't even drink caffeine let alone alcohol.
She told US Weekly: "I have taken care of myself and now it shows."
It wasn't just the jarring change-of-heart that had fans criticising her choices. Her husband, Ben Affleck, has a history of alcoholism. Fans felt that Lopez's business decision seemed to be inconsiderate of Affleck's past.
It wouldn't be the first time that alcohol has been speculated to be a point of contention in their relationship. In 2022, a video went viral of the pair at a party for Lopez's movie Shotgun Wedding. It showed Lopez taking a sip of wine before Affleck gave her a disapproving look. She then sat the glass down.
Lopez did take to social media to combat the discourse. In a video, she shut down the haters.
She said: "I do enjoy the occasional cocktail. I do drink responsibly, I don’t drink to get s**tfaced. I drink to be social and to have a nice time and just relax and let loose a bit, but always responsibly.”
Apparently, the idea that she has full written off alcohol was outdated. Lopez admitted that she drinks occasionally and has over the past decade or so. She also goes on to explain that its difficult for her to find alcohol that fits her lifestyle which is why she made her own.
Lopez said: "And so like anything else in my life, I made it myself. I created Delola and Delola is really about a healthier way, something that fit my lifestyle to drink the way that I would drink, the way Jennifer drinks."
She didn't comment on the status of her husband's relationship with alcohol, focusing only on her own. However, Affleck has, in the past, opened up about his alcoholism.
He said on the TODAY Show: “It doesn’t have to subsume my whole identity and be everything, but it is something that you have to work at.”
