Jennie's Calvin Klein Summer Sonic Look Brings '90s Fashion Nostalgia Into Focus

Jennie brought a distinctly nostalgic fashion reference to Summer Sonic in Tokyo on Friday, August 15, wearing two custom Calvin Klein Collection looks that revisited the label's '90s denim codes. The outfits included a pair of backwards jeans inspired by a 1993 runway look worn by Kate Moss and a second ensemble built almost entirely from recycled Calvin Klein jean waistbands.

According to W Magazine, the first look drew directly from Calvin Klein's Spring 1993 collection, with the oversized jeans turned around so their large back pockets and leather brand patch became the focal point at the front. Jennie paired them with a loose blue denim waistcoat, a Calvin Klein bra and underwear layer, an embroidered CK beret and a layered necklace.

The styling also included boots and leather gloves, giving the archival-inspired outfit a distinctly stage-ready finish. The silhouette closely followed Moss's original runway styling while introducing accessories and details that made it specific to Jennie's Summer Sonic performance.

Jennie Reworks a Kate Moss-Era Calvin Klein Look

The backwards jeans are perhaps the most recognizable element of the first ensemble, but the reference goes beyond Calvin Klein. As W Magazine noted, wearing denim backwards was also popularized in '90s hip-hop culture by Kris Kross, giving the styling a connection to both runway fashion and streetwear.

NYLON similarly identified Jennie's outfit as a recreation of the 1993 Calvin Klein runway moment, noting the combination of the baggy denim vest, backwards jeans, triangle bra and boxers. The publication also highlighted the beaded necklaces as a contemporary styling touch layered onto the archival reference.

Jennie's second look moved from archival recreation to reinterpretation. She wore a custom Calvin Klein Collection minidress made from recycled Calvin Klein jean waistbands, with the repeated waistbands creating the structure and pattern of the garment. An archival brown leather belt completed the look.

According to NYLON, the waistband dress transformed a familiar part of a pair of jeans into the primary material of an entirely different garment. The approach makes the second look less about reproducing a specific '90s outfit and more about taking a recognizable Calvin Klein design element and giving it a new function.

Calvin Klein's '90s Legacy Gets a New Context

The significance of the looks lies partly in how directly they engage with Calvin Klein's fashion history. The house's denim and underwear designs became closely associated with the pared-back American fashion vocabulary of the 1990s, while Kate Moss became one of the era's most recognizable faces through her work with the brand.

Jennie's first outfit therefore functions as a direct archival reference, while the second demonstrates a more experimental approach to fashion nostalgia. Rather than simply reproducing an older look, the custom pieces extract recognizable details from Calvin Klein's past and adapt them for a contemporary performance.

That distinction is important as archival-inspired dressing continues to shape conversations around fashion nostalgia. Jennie's Summer Sonic wardrobe offers a particularly literal example: one look revisits a specific runway image from more than three decades ago, while the other turns an everyday denim component into something entirely new.

Red Carpet Fashion Awards also noted that the two looks brought together Calvin Klein's archival references and upcycling, emphasizing how the brand's history was incorporated into both outfits.

Together, the looks place Jennie within a larger conversation about how fashion revisits its own archives. At Summer Sonic, Calvin Klein's '90s references were not treated as pieces frozen in time. They became the starting point for custom designs that connected the label's denim history with contemporary festival dressing.
