On Saturday, Jen Pawol made history by becoming the first woman to umpire a major league spring training game in eight years. The game took place at CACTI Park of The Palm Beaches between the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals. Pawol, a former New Jersey high school softball star, played at Hofstra before transitioning to umpiring. She was stationed at third base for the Grapefruit League opener.
After the customary pregame meeting with umpires and managers, Pawol posed for pictures with the group. Nationals manager Dave Martinez congratulated and chatted briefly with her. Pawol expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome and enthusiasm shown by everyone on the field, including players and coaches.
Pawol, 47, will continue to umpire spring training games in Palm Beach County over the next few weeks. Despite her milestone in spring training, no woman has been assigned to umpire a regular season game in the majors. She will be behind the plate for the Nationals-Marlins game in Jupiter on Sunday.
During the Astros-Nationals game, Pawol rotated positions every three innings, moving from third base to second base and then to first base. She made notable calls throughout the game, including a crucial play in the bottom of the fourth when she stopped play to ensure the Astros had a centerfielder on the field.
Pawol's journey in umpiring reflects a growing trend of inclusivity in professional sports officiating. She emphasized that umpiring is a viable career for both men and women, highlighting the importance of hard work and dedication in the field. Crew chief Lance Barksdale commended Pawol for her performance, noting her professionalism and accuracy in making calls.
Pawol's debut marks a significant step forward in breaking gender barriers in sports officiating. Her passion for umpiring and dedication to the craft have paved the way for future generations of aspiring umpires, regardless of gender.
