Jeff Stelling in brutal LIV Golf dig as Sky Sports icon wades into Anthony Taylor debate

Iconic Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling took to social media to take a brutal dig at the controversial LIV Golf Series during a Twitter spat with a follower.

Stelling is best known for presenting Sky's Soccer Saturday show, and retired from the role after 25 years following last weekend's games. As well as being a keen lover of football and his beloved Hartlepool United, it seems the Sky presenter is also a golf fan too.

Of course the hottest topic surrounding the world of golf over the past 12 months has been the ongoing civil war within the sport between the PGA Tour and the newly formed LIV Golf.

Having formed at Centurion Club last June, the controversial breakaway circuit has lured in a whole host of big names including Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson. LIV has faced a whole host of criticism since its inception having gone toe-to-toe with the PGA Tour.

Additionally, the breakaway circuit's funding from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment fund has drawn many to label the league a sportswashing exercise of the Middle Eastern country. Among the Saudi-backed series' critics, one man who has shown his anti-LIV colours is Stelling.

The former Sky man took to Twitter on Thursday to criticise the treatment of English referee Anthony Taylor, after he was abused by Jose Mourinho and a set of Roma fans following the Italian club's defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final earlier this week.

Slamming Mourinho, he said: "Jose Mourinho actions and words contributed massively to the disgraceful behaviour towards Antony Taylor. He is a repeat repeat repeat offender. Needs the strongest possible punishment." The tweet sparked a lengthy debate with his followers.

And one Twitter user called on referee Taylor to be punished rather than the Italian side. Clearly in disagreement, and taking aim at his follower's love for LIV Golf, Stelling replied: "You support LIV golf so your view does not really count."

Stelling is not alone in criticising LIV Golf, sharing similar stances to arguably golf's two biggest names in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who have both called on LIV boss Greg Norman to step down from his role.

Warning McIlroy co, Norman responded per Golf.com: "Rory doesn’t know what he’s talking about with LIV because he doesn’t know the facts... I’ve always been a fan of Rory’s but my advice to him would be to just sit back, just take stock, watch what happens and watch what you say."
