Jeff Hendrick was relieved to cap off a ‘crazy birthday’ by securing a late night move to QPR.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder turned 30 yesterday but spent it nailing down the loan move until the end of the season.
And he revealed his frustration at his lack of game time at Newcastle United where he made just four appearances this season.
Hendrick’s deal was only finalised minutes before the 11.00pm transfer deadline and wasn’t officially announced until midnight.
But he is relishing the chance to play his part in QPR’s promotion push as they sit fourth in the Championship table.
Hendrick - who was also on Middlesbrough's radar - was a peripheral figure at Newcastle United and was not in new manager Eddie Howe’s plans.
But he was a key man in the second-half of 2021 for Ireland and Stephen Kenny will be thrilled that the Dubiner has got his move.
Hendrick said: “It was a bit of a crazy birthday, just waiting for this to happen, but I’m really excited.
“I’ve been following the team throughout this season and they’re in a good position in the league. Hopefully, I can come in and help give that last push to get promoted.”
“‘I’ve played against the manager’s (Mark Warburton) teams throughout the league and they always play good football.
“John Eustace is there who I played with, and I know certain players like Jimmy Dunne and Andre Gray. I just thought this would be the right fit for me."
Hendrick continued: “Anyone who knows me will know I’ll be disappointed with the game time I’ve got this season so I wanted to get out, get games and enjoy my football.
“I wasn’t just going to sit around. A big thing for me is to push myself and enjoy my football. I just want to hit the ground running.”
QPR boss Warburton feels an experienced international player like Hendrick will aid the club’s promotion push.
Warburton said: “I’m delighted to bring Jeff in. We’re always looking to add experience and quality to our ranks, especially ahead of such an important stage of the season.
“Jeff has shown his quality at the highest level on the international stage and in the Premier League.
“He also possesses that Championship experience, too, which can be so important.
“Everyone you speak to speaks so highly of Jeff, of his character and his work ethic and there’s no doubt he will add another layer of quality to the squad.”
