Jeanfield manager Ross Gunnion admits he was surprised Saturday’s trip to Whitehill Welfare got the nod due to Storm Malik.
But even more surprising for the Riverside boss was that defender Jamie Reid pitched in with two tremendous goals in the 5-1 win!
The defender is not usually renowned for finding the back of the net but his shooting boots were well and truly on at Ferguson Park.
Reid opened the scoring before Connor McLaren got in on the act with a quick-fire double.
While the hosts did pull one back, Reid was at it again with a peach of a strike and then Chris McLeish added a fifth.
All of this action took place in the opening half and there were to be no further goals after the break.
Gunnion noted: “Jamie Reid scoring two is a first in my time. But both goals were out of the top drawer.
“Two strikes from 20 yards out and the second was unstoppable.
“That said, his defensive play was equally impressive and he kept their talented left winger quiet for the whole game.”
On the team’s Premier Division performance, Gunnion continued: “I was really pleased. The conditions were awful to play in.
“I was actually surprised the game went ahead given the disruption the weather caused throughout the country.
“But the players handled the conditions well and produced a very good first half to blow the opposition away.
“It’s never easy when a team is fighting for their lives like Whitehill are, but we didn’t give them a chance to get a foothold in the game.”
