US Vice President JD Vance shared an exclusive excerpt from his upcoming book “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith” where he revealed how he got ‘obsessed’ with Usha. He revealed that his obsession started while he was dating Mary, adding he would remain a bachelor all his life if he didn't marry her. "I will marry this girl or be a lifelong bachelor", he wrote in his memoir.

“A few months after that conversation, I was still dating Mary – now long distance, from New Haven, Connecticut, where I was a couple of months into my first year of law school. I was walking late at night on an unusually cold and rainy fall day. New Haven is spooky in the fog, and the rain had emptied out the streets. And the whole time I was thinking about another student: Usha Bala Chilukuri," JD Vance wrote.
“‘Dude, I think I’m obsessed with this chick in my small group. It’s unhealthy,” he recalls telling his friend about Usha.

'Will marry her or be a lifelong bachelor'
The “Hillbilly Elegy ”author called Usha “smarter than everyone,” noting she had “the most amazing posture and her smile could light up the room". Vance analysed how, during his relationship, his friend had acknowledged that he and his girlfriend weren’t a good match, she was jealous, demanded too much of his time and more. “‘I will marry this girl,’ I told my friends. ‘Or I will be a lifelong bachelor,"" Vance wrote.
“She doesn’t even walk like normal people. Normal girls seem kind of unstable in high heels,” I told him. “Not her. She glides across the room in whatever shoes she wears. And her laugh, man. Whenever she laughs, it’s, like, the most wonderful thing. She’s super reserved, but she has this chortle that is the best sound I’ve ever heard.”
When JD Vance saw in Usha
He recalled an interview in which one of his classmates said he was drawn to Usha because of her “ambitions,” a remark that made both of them laugh. He said a few qualities about Usha always stood out to him: she was intensely competitive, incapable of jealousy, and largely uninterested in conventional measures of success.
At the time, Usha’s dream job was to lead the Sesame Workshop because she loved children and admired the idea of creating educational programming for them. “You have the biggest mismatch between ambition and ability of any person I’ve ever met. You could be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and you have no interest in it,” he told her.
He also wrote that instead of following the usual dating rituals like playing hard to get or taking things slow, he told Usha even before they started dating that he was in love with her and, just a few weeks into the relationship, that he wanted to marry her. Describing himself as a “lousy boyfriend,” Vance admitted he did not deserve Usha, but added that “still she stuck around".
Special wish for Mother's Day
On the occasion of Mother's Day, Vance took to X to congratulate Usha who is expecting her fourth child.
“This is a particularly special Mother's Day in the Vance clan, as Usha is about to become a mom for the fourth time. We thought it would be fun to put out a little excerpt from my new book about the early days of our relationship. To all the moms out there, but especially to Usha: Happy Mother's Day!” he wrote.
JD Vance and Usha have been married for over a decade, having tied the knot in 2014. They met while attending Yale Law School and held both Christian and Hindu ceremonies. Despite rumours of marital troubles, she is currently pregnant with their fourth child.
