Jay-Z has lodged court documents asking for the rape lawsuit against him to be dismissed and requested that the name of the accuser be made public.
The rapper, real name Shawn Carter, has claimed that lawyer Tony Buzbee — who says he represents 120 alleged victims in the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs case — has been behind an “extortionate campaign” against him.
“That campaign was cynical and calculated to force payment of an exorbitant sum of money — Defendant would have to pay X millions of dollars irrespective of the truth, or else,” the court filing says, as per Page Six.
“When Defendant refused to pay and instead took measures to establish his innocence, this unnamed Plaintiff and her self-promoting counsel (whose name has been splashed across headlines and press conferences under auspices of representing her) went to extraordinary lengths to shut down fair defence.”
The civil lawsuit in question accuses Jay-Z of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000 alongside Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Per Variety, the lawsuit originally listed Combs as the only defendant in October, but it has since been refiled to include Jay-Z as well. In response, Jay-Z penned a furious denial shared on his business account Roc Nation, calling Buzbee a “fraud”.
Jay-Z claims that Buzbee’s client is “hiding behind the pseudonym ‘Jane Doe’” and levelling “baseless allegations” against him.
“These claims are not about justice for victims. Nor are they about giving victims of sexual violence a voice,” the document reads. “Instead, they are merely the next chapter in Attorney Buzbee’s sprawling extortion saga — a saga whose aim is base and measured in dollars.”
The accused rapper requested the court deny the plaintiff’s motion or reveal her identity to the public “immediately”.
If this doesn’t happen, he would like the court to dismiss Jane Doe’s civil lawsuit “for lack of subject matter jurisdiction due to the plaintiff’s lack of standing”.
“Plaintiff has provided no evidence — no affidavit, declaration, or specific factual support — to establish the kind of severe harm necessary to justify pseudonymity,” the letter reads.
Jay-Z’s legal team also asked the judge to expedite their request because of the “highly sensitive nature” of the civil lawsuit and “intense media scrutiny”.
“Every day and in real-time, Buzbee continues to amplify false narratives, exploiting the legal process to generate media attention and damage Mr. Carter’s reputation. This relentless campaign underscores the need for a fast-track hearing to address these issues promptly and prevent further harm,” his lawyers wrote.
The Jane Doe of this civil lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and has been filed under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act according to NBC News.
