Jay Gorter has Aberdeen No 1 assurance as Dutch keeper makes 'kick and rush' Scottish football claim

New Aberdeen keeper Jay Gorter has revealed he's been assured he will be the Dons' No.1 after joining on loan from Ajax.

The struggling Pittodrie side secured the promising Dutch keeper on loan this week, but he was unavailable to make his debut in their midweek defeat to St Mirren. Veteran shot stopper and former Aberdeen captain Joe Lewis has been in goals after Kelle Roos suffered a thigh injury that is expected to keep him out for ten weeks.

And 22-year-old Gorter admits he was desperate to join Aberdeen to get game time. Speaking on a Dutch podcast, Gorter said: "Yes, I got that promise that I would be first choice. Of course, I went to Aberdeen for playing minutes. That is important for me for this loan period. I did my research and had discussions with the management. Everyone knows that the Scottish league used to be known for kick and rush.

"But that has now changed with Rangers, Celtic and other teams who are also doing well. It has now become more technical. Playing in a slightly more physical competition also appeals to me. I expect that I will get plenty to do and that is also important to me.

"It's been hectic and it's very different from the Netherlands. I spoke to Ajax and I wanted to play at a higher level than the second division in the Netherlands on loan. I wanted to look at a bigger competition to get more playing minutes.

"There were several loan options, but I chose Aberdeen. There were also transfer options from other clubs, but I certainly didn't want that and neither did Ajax. It didn't really matter to me whether it was at home or abroad. We started looking further afield and Scotland should suit me. I am very happy to join Aberdeen. Ajax giving me a new contract says it all about what they think about me, but I know I need game time."
