Jay Cartmell: Police name boy, 8, who died after being shot on farm

An eight-year-old boy who died after being shot on a farm in Cumbria has been named by police as Jay Cartmell.

Emergency services were called at around 2.50pm on Saturday to a property near the A66, north of Warcop.

Cartmell, from Frizington, was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening head and face injuries but tragically died overnight.

A firearm was secured at the scene by police, and a man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

The man remains on bail as police continue their investigation, police said.

Cumbria Police on Monday encouraged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.

Tim Farron, who is MP for the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency, said: "This is an absolutely heartbreaking tragedy. I am praying for the family of the child and all those affected."
