Javonte Williams says Broncos’ offense aims to confuse defenses in 2022

After three years of playing under a defensive-minded head coach in Vic Fangio with underwhelming offensive performances, the Denver Broncos reversed course and brought in offensive-minded Nathaniel Hackett.

Hackett brought with him his offensive scheme and his own staff, highlighted by offensive coordinator Justin Outten. Broncos general manager George Paton also pulled off a trade for quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason.

The new scheme and a new franchise quarterback should help Denver’s offense get back on track in 2022. It’s a complex system, one that’s meant to keep the defense guessing on every play.

“Every meeting that we have, we talk about confusion,” running back Javonte Williams said last week. “We want everything to look the same so that way the defense doesn’t know when a different play is coming. I feel like this is the most complex offense that I have been in, but I feel like it will be the best because you never know what’s coming at you.”

Hackett’s offense with the Green Bay Packers helped quarterback Aaron Rodgers win back-to-back NFL MVP awards, but they also featured their running backs enough for Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon to combine for 2,306 yards from scrimmage and 17 touchdowns in 2021.

A star quarterback leading the offense complemented by two talented running backs sharing the load. Sound familiar?

Denver’s offense is back.
