Jarrod Bowen desperate for World Cup spot after ‘loving every minute’ of maiden England call-up

Jarrod Bowen is desperate to force his way into England’s World Cup plans after “loving every minute” of his maiden call-up.

Bowen, who had never played for England at any level, was brought into Gareth Southgate’s senior squad for the first time for this month’s quartet of Nations League games, following a superb season with West Ham.

The winger scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists in all competitions, earning a place on the shortlist for the Premier League’s Player of the Year award.

His performance on debut was one of the few bright spots in the 1-0 defeat by Hungary and the 25-year-old won his second and third caps in cameos off the bench against Germany and Italy.

“I’ve loved every minute,” Bowen said. “When I came in it was all new and it was about showing what I am about. I think I have done that with the game-time that I’ve had. I didn’t know if I was going to play coming here, so I am grateful to play the minutes that I have, with one game left as well.”

England have just three matches left before Southgate names his World Cup squad, starting with Tuesday’s clash, which may see Bowen handed another start.

Phil Foden trained this morning in a bid to prove his fitness for tomorrow. The Manchester City midfielder contracted Covid-19 this month and he has missed all three Nations League games.

Foden returned to training at the back end of last week, but he was not fit enough to face Italy.

Southgate named a squad of 27 players for this international break but can take just 23 to Qatar, meaning he has tough decisions ahead.
