Jared Kushner's Key Role In Trump's Middle East Strategy

Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump speak

President-elect Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is viewed as a key player in the incoming administration’s Middle East efforts, despite not expected to hold a formal position within it, according to regional diplomats and Trump allies. Kushner's established relationships with leaders in the region over the past four years are seen as invaluable and hard to replicate.

During Trump's first term, Kushner served as the chief Middle East negotiator and earned trust through his efforts, which many regional diplomats acknowledge. His deep personal connections with leaders in the Middle East, including Israeli and Arab Gulf officials, have been highlighted as a significant asset.

While Kushner is not likely to have an official role in Trump's second administration, sources familiar with his current thinking suggest he will continue to advise on Middle East matters. Both Kushner and Trump are keen on furthering efforts to normalize relations between Israel and other Arab states following the Abraham Accords.

However, Kushner's financial interests in the region, including a $2 billion funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund for his investment fund, have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Some US diplomats worry about Trump prioritizing his family's financial gains over national interests.

Despite these concerns, Kushner's involvement is seen as crucial for advancing Trump's objectives in the Middle East, particularly in ending conflicts and promoting US-Saudi normalization. His established relationships with key players in the region, such as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are expected to play a pivotal role in future engagements.

While Trump has appointed individuals with their own relationships in the region, such as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and real estate developer Steve Witkoff, the dynamics of how they will work together with Kushner remain uncertain. However, there is a consensus among various stakeholders that Kushner will continue to influence the administration's approach to the Middle East, whether or not he holds an official position.
