Jared Goff did not have a great first season in Detroit. One of the big issues was his mismatched fit with Anthony Lynn, who began the 2021 season as the Lions offensive coordinator.
Now the arrow is pointing up for Goff, and one big reason is new offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Their relationship took off when Lynn was canned midway through last season and Johnson, then an assistant, took over more responsibility in offensive planning and coaching.
Now that Johnson is the OC, he and Goff are working together quite closely. The veteran QB could not be happier with the improved arrangement. In his post-practice press conference on Wednesday, Goff was about as excited as he’s ever shown in Detroit when talking about Johnson.
“Yeah, it’s been better than I could ever imagine,” Goff responded when asked about his relationship with Johnson. “The trust he has in me, and the amount of questions he asks me, and vice versa, the amount of questions I can ask him. And his responsiveness, and how great he is at listening, all that stuff is so helpful for a quarterback and I don’t take it for granted. He’s a great coach and someone I’m excited to work with.”
Goff is a quarterback who needs to have the support and confidence from his coaches and teammates to be at his best. He’s found that in Johnson.
