Japan’s native population dips below 120 million for first time in decades

Japan’s population has fallen below 120 million for the first time in more than 40 years, as the country struggles with a falling birthrate and a rapidly ageing population.

Government data released on Wednesday showed that the number of Japanese nationals living in the country stood at 119.74 million as of 1 January, down 0.76 per cent from a year earlier.
