Japan PM stays away from shrine to WWII dead but defence minister’s visit angers neighbours

Sanae Takaichi avoided visiting the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo despite past pledges to visit the monument on the anniversary of Japan’s surrender during World War II.

The shrine honours some 2.4 million people, including 14 war criminals, who died for the Asian nation during the war and is seen as a symbol of Japanese militarism.
