Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has lodged a strong protest with the United States after a 20-year-old US Marine was arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery in Okinawa. The arrest followed the discovery of a 39-year-old woman's body in a hotel room in Naha early on Saturday.

Okinawa police said the woman was found unresponsive at about 4.30am local time and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police told reporters that the condition of her body suggested she had been murdered, although investigators have not released further details.
