The death toll from Tuesday's earthquake in southern Japan has risen to 18, as the country's leader said rescuers face a “race against time” to reach more people trapped after the 6.8-magnitude tremor.
Prime minister Sanae Takaichi said emergency workers in Kumamoto Prefecture “will marshal all available resources on the ground to save and rescue as many people as possible”.
