Japan and Sweden secure World Cup knockout places after 1-1 draw

  • Japan and Sweden played out a 1-1 draw in their final Group F match in Dallas, which saw both nations secure their places in the World Cup knockout phase.
  • Daizen Maeda opened the scoring for Japan in the 55th minute, finishing a well-worked move after a first half that offered few clear-cut opportunities.
  • Anthony Elanga quickly equalised for Sweden just six minutes later, cutting in from the right wing to curl a low shot past Japan's goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki.
  • The result means Japan finished second in Group F, while Sweden topped the third-place teams, further diminishing Scotland’s hopes of reaching the last 32.
  • Both goalkeepers, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom for Sweden and Zion Suzuki for Japan, made several key saves, particularly in the second half as the game opened up.
