Janey Godley recalls last seeing 'murdered' mum on Mother's Day 40 years ago

Ahead of Mother's Day on Sunday, comedian Janey Godley has paid tribute to her late mother, 40 years on from her death.

Janey, 61, was 21-years-old when her mother's body was discovered in the River Clyde during the 1980s.

The actress and writer believes Annie Currie was murdered by a violent ex-boyfriend but despite calls for an investigation, the man she suspects of murder has never charged by police for her mother's death.

Taking to Twitter on Friday morning, Janey shared an old snap of her late mother with her 250,600 followers on the social media platform.

She captioned the picture: "40 years ago, #MothersDay 1982 was the last time I saw my mammy alive, days later, she was murdered by her ex boyfriend and thrown in the River Clyde - her name was Annie Currie - she will not be forgotten #HappyMothersDay2022."

Janey - who is currently battling ovarian cancer - replied to several fans and followers who sent their well wishes and condolences underneath the tribute.

One fan told the star: "Your poor mother And of course, poor you!! I know it's many years later but I'm sorry for your loss. My own mother died in February. Grief is a bugger, isn't it?"

This isn't the first time Janey has spoken about her late mother and what she believes to be the cause of her death.

Speaking on social media in the past, the Scottish comedian reflected on the small comfort she can take in her mother's body being discovered so soon after her disappearance.

"Watching documentaries about women who went missing and years later their body is found, makes me feel strangely blessed that my mums body was found in River Clyde four days after she went missing, even though the guy that killed her escaped justice, I didn’t have to wait years," Janey mused online.

"Some women were never found and although I still miss Annie (my mum) I am at peace that we never spent decades wondering where she is, that is such a trauma for families."

Janey's social media tribute to her late mother comes just days after the star told her fans she has accepted she "may be facing death".

The stand-up comedian revealed her ovarian cancer diagnosis in November 2021, and she has been sharing updates ever since.

"I think I’ve had an epiphany, I have been resisting the fact I have a life threatening cancer," Janey penned on Facebook earlier this week.

"I have tried to 'fight and be strong' instead of accepting that this whole year I just may be facing death or survival of something I have no real control over."

She added: "I appreciate all the amazing support and I believe my mental health will improve if I just lean into the fact that this cancer is happening. I am not alone, millions of people survive this disease and living with it isn’t a failure - maybe I don’t have to fight every thing that happens to me and trust the science?"
