Jan, 62, knew something was wrong but didn't expect 'out of the blue' diagnosis

A grandmother was diagnosed with a brain tumour after she became forgetful - and wrote a book for her grandson in one night to pass on life lessons. Jan Burrell, 62, knew something was wrong when she became forgetful in 2019.

And she suffered a seizure in February 2021 which was initially thought to have been a stroke before a scan revealed a fist-sized meningioma. Fearful her 11-month-old grandson, Finn, now two, would grow up without the life-lessons from his granny, she wrote a book in one night while waiting for surgery.

She eventually had surgery to remove most of the tumour in May 2021 and went on to also illustrate the book, Finn’s Wonderful World. Mrs Burrell, from Stroud, Gloucs., said: “The tumour was an uninvited guest - it arrived completely out of the blue.
