Trumps hits out at former White House aide
Trump critic and 6 January committee member Liz Cheney last night faced a slate of primary challengers for a TV debate as she fights to retain her Wyoming seat in the House of Representatives.
The seat is among the most heavily Republican in the US, so whoever wins the primary is all but certain to take it in November. Ms Cheney’s leading challenger, Harriet Hageman, has been endorsed by both Mr Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Meanwhile, claims and counter-claims are flying over testimony from former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson that Donald Trump lunged for the wheel of a car and grabbed a Secret Service agent when he realised he was being driven away from the Capitol on 6 January 2021.
The former agent whom Ms Hutchinson says told her the story, Tony Ornato, says that no such event occurred. He has already testified to the 6 January committee, and may do so again. However, more than one former Trump aide has said he has a reputation for denying the truth of well-known conversations and events after the fact.
