Jamie Webster hits out at 'lying politicians' as he makes 'dream' Glastonbury Festival debut

Jamie Webster took to the stage at Glastonbury Festival tonight at a jam-packed Left Field stage.

The singer-songwriter joined the huge line-up this year, alongside another Liverpool icon - Paul McCartney, plus Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and many more. Speaking before the festival, the 28-year-old said getting asked to play by musician Billy Bragg, who has co-curated the activist stage, was a “bucket list” moment.

This is something he echoed throughout his performance, saying it’s the “best place in the world” , adding “it’s the only festival I’ve ever been to and not seen a fight.” It’s no surprise that the crowd was filled primarily of scousers and LFC-fans but the magic of Glastonbury is that the audience is made up of people from all walks of life.

At Jamie’s set, groups of people from across Liverpool were rubbing shoulders with people from all around the country; who were all mesmerised by the man with a guitar, leading a sing-a-long with the masses. Crowds flooded out from the red tent and gathered outside, with his fans clearly outnumbering the under cover capacity.

Known for his Tory-baiting lyrics and his catchphrase ‘f*** the Tories’, Jamie was sure to take a hit at those currently in power, when he took to the Left Field stage tonight. Before his set had even started fans were chanting ‘f*** the Tories’. This was something that happened often throughout the gig, with it being screamed between every couple of songs.

When Jamie did take to the stage he came out to Praise You by Fatboy Slim and set the tone for an energetic set. The first time he took to the mic he said: “Glastonbury what the f*** is happening” and went straight into his song Living for Yesterday.

Fans don’t just love Jamie for his music but for what he stands for, having previously gone viral for his criticising of ticket resale sites. Last year he posted a video to his Twitter and Instagram accounts saying he was disgusted when his Cavern show sold out, only for tickets to appear on resale sites for more than three times the original price.

In the video he claimed that “politics is well and truly entwined to the music industry” and that culture secretary Sajid Javid had opposed a bill proposed to stop ticketing websites selling tickets on for more than 10 per cent of the original face value.

Given his track record, and the fact he was playing arguably his most iconic gig yet, it was only right that Jamie shared more of his stances with the Glastonbury crowds. He spoke about “lying politicians” , the fake “influencer types” and reality TV shows such as Love Island. He also didn’t hold back complimenting the rowdy crowd and his devoted fans who.

His set was filled with his well known songs Weekend In Paradise, This Place and Days Unknown. Red flares, matching the aptly coloured red tent, were lit in the crowds and This Place played and audiences bounced along. He also played some new material including Down The Road.
