Jamie Redknapp supported by celeb pals as he shares positive post-surgery update

Jamie Redknapp is seeing the funny side of his health woes.

The retired footballer, 49, joked with his fans how he will soon be "setting off airport X-ray machines" after being admitted to hospital to have knee replacement surgery.

Dad-of-three Jamie took to Instagram on Saturday to share a positive update from his hospital bed and explain to his followers just why he made the decision to have the surgery.

As the former England international shared his story, fans and famous friends gathered in the comment section to send their love to Jamie - with messages from actor Jamie Dornan, Paddy McGuinness and a whole host of sports stars amongst the well-wishes.

Jamie - who became a dad for the third time last year - was plagued with injuries throughout his footballing career and has previously had a total of 12 surgeries on his right knee.

The footballer-turned-presenter was forced to retire from playing early at the age of 30 due to his joint problems, after enjoying spells at Liverpool and Tottenham alongside representing his country during international tournaments.

"So I have finally decided to fix my knee and get a full knee replacement," Jamie began on Saturday when captioning a snap of himself recovering in a hospital bed.

The star - who shares two of his children with ex-wife Louise Redknapp - went on to recall how his knee has troubled him since the age of 18 and used to see him having "physio appointments at all hours" during his playing career.

Jamie went on to write: "At 27, I was lucky enough to meet an amazing surgeon called Richard Steadman. He managed to give me a few more years of my career, before I had to retire from the game I love at 30 .

"Having a young baby has also made this decision easier, as I need to be as mobile as possible so I can chase that little speedy rascal around."

The dad-of-three welcomed his youngest son Raphael into the world with wife Frida Andersson in November last year. The former footballer also shares teenage sons sons Charley, 17, and Beau, 13 with ex Louise, whom he split from in 2017 after 19 years of marriage.

In his Instagram caption, Jamie continued to say: "I want to thank you Dr Sweetnam ,and your great team, for looking after me so amazingly well.

"As you can see on pic 2 I assume I will be setting off the X-ray machines at the airport with my new titanium knee ."

He concluded his post with: "So here is to a new beginning, I’m excited for this next chapter.

"And watching all the World Cup games is going to make this rehab a touch easier."

Micah Richards, who works with Jamie as a pundit on Sky Sports, was one of the first to comment on his pal's update, quipping: "Still looks handsome Ffs [laughing emoji]."

"Hope it heals up fast son! Will only improve your golf game," 50 Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan wrote, as McFly singer Danny Jones commented: "Speedy recovery mate! We are in recovery together just had my ACL reconstruction."
