Jamie Redknapp is in awe of how Eddie Howe has transformed Newcastle United’s backline. One stick critics used to beat the former Bournemouth boss with before his appointment was the number of goals conceded.
Howe has adopted an attacking, win-at-all-costs philosophy throughout his career which led sceptics to believe he was not the right man for Newcastle. With the club in a perilous league position last November, a more pragmatic approach was touted by some.
However, the 44-year-old has silenced his naysayers in more ways than one. Not only have Newcastle been winning games, but they are also doing so without conceding many goals.

No Premier League team has shipped fewer than the Magpies in 2022-23 and Nick Pope is joint-top in the clean sheet charts with five. A solid defence has formed the bedrock of Newcastle’s impressive start to the campaign without hindering their output going forward.
Ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp recognised Howe’s new-found defensive sturdiness before the 2-1 win against his former side. He told Sky Sports: “Botman’s been a really good signing, imposing, good attributes.
“Trippier is a great right-back, one surprise is Dan Burn, you wouldn’t think he would be a left-back, he’s so adaptable, a leader, Schar. Eddie Howe deserves credit, it takes a lot of organisation.”
