Jamie Redknapp feels a 'bit sorry' for Newcastle star Miguel Almiron despite 'story of the season'

Jamie Redknapp feels a 'bit sorry' for Miguel Almiron as the World Cup break has come at the wrong time for the Newcastle United star. The Paraguay international has been in scintillating form and was voted the Premier League's Player of the Month for October after netting six goals.

Almiron had consistently impressed with his work-rate since his then club-record arrival from Atlanta United in January 2019. However, the attacker had struggled to deliver in the final third and initially found himself out of the starting eleven following Eddie Howe's appointment last November.

The 28-year-old has made the right forward spot his own this term, and this devastating run of form last month was followed by another goal in the 4-1 victory at Southampton. Redknapp labelled Almiron as the 'individual success story of the season so far', and believes the in-form forward will not want the season to be put on hold.

Speaking ahead of the Saturday night clash with Chelsea, Redknapp told Sky Sports: "It is the individual success story of the season. I don't think anybody could have foreseen the form he's been on, he's just been a player revitalised.

"Full of confidence, making things happen, scoring important goals, and it's a credit to him first and foremost. But you also have to look at what the manager has done, bringing out that belief in him. We often used to see him do great bits of skill, then get in front of goal and mishit or perhaps shoot over the bar.

"Everything right now is going his way, and some of these individual goals are just world class. There's no other way to put it.

"The only thing is I feel a bit sorry for him because this break has almost come at the wrong time for him. He wants to keep going, when you're in this kind of form and scoring goals, you don't want this break to come.

Almiron has forged a formidable partnership with January signing Kieran Trippier down the right flank. Redknapp's fellow pundit Karen Carney believes the arrival of the England international has helped push the Magpies' attackers to the next level.

She said: "I think Trippier has really helped him. Even Saint-Maximin when he's played, Trippier has come in and made them better players.

"From playing as a right winger, when my right back is giving me all of the encouragement in the world, being front-footed, being aggressive and telling me to go for it, not pulling me back and playing crab football side to side. He's an energy player, you have to release him and I think Trippier has done that with him."
