Jamie McGrath linked to Birmingham City after plug pulled on Aberdeen move

Ireland midfielder Jamie McGrath has been linked with Birmingham City after the plug was pulled on a potential move to Aberdeen.

The Meath man had been in negotiations for a pre-contract move to the Dons from St Mirren but the club have pulled out of the switch with manager Stephen Glass saying he only wants players with real hunger at Pittodrie, reports the Daily Record.

Aberdeen were not prepared to play the waiting game with the six times capped McGrath and are now looking at other targets.

Glass, who refused to talk about midfielder specifically, said: “We want players that want to come play for Aberdeen.

“There is a pressure that is attached to playing here at this club.

“We are hoping that the targets we go for can see what we offer them for their careers.

“It’s a brilliant club to play for and I’m sure we will get the right people in the door.”

The former St Patrick's Athletic and Dundalk man moved to Simple Digital Arena in January 2020 and has since hit 20 goals in 66 appearances while also providing seven assists.

His fine form in Scotland saw him make his Ireland debut in Faro where he created a goal for John Egan in Ireland's agonising last minute defeat to Portugal last September.

The 25-year-old is now said to prefer a move south of the border with Birmingham "keen" on his services, according to The Scotsman.

Wigan Athletic have also been mooted as a possible destination with St Mirren putting a £350,000 price tag on McGrath for any club hoping to sign him this month rather than when his contract runs out at the end of the season.
