Jamie McGrath has put pen to paper to join Dundee United on a season-long loan deal.
The former St Mirren and Hibs man joins the Tannadice outfit ahead of their Europa Conference League third round qualifier at home to AZ Alkmaar tomorrow night. The Republic of Ireland international has not been short of attention this summer, with Aberdeen also interested. But as exclusively revealed by Record Sport on Tuesday, the winger has opted to make the move to join Jack Ross' side, instead of reuniting with former boss Jim Goodwin, after sporting director Tony Asghar fought hard to bring him to the City of Discovery.
McGrath arrives at Dundee United from Wigan Athletic for the remainder of the campaign in the hopes of more first team football. The 25-year-old made the move to Wigan in January after departing St Mirren. But he has made just four appearances across all competition since. He is likely to slot straight into the squad for tomorrow night's clash.
The midfielder joins Steven Fletcher, Dylan Levitt, Craig Sibbald, Mark Birighitti, Aziz Behich and Glenn Middleton who have joined Dundee United this summer. Following the news, United boss Jack Ross said: "Jamie was a player who had a huge impact on the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren,” said United Head Coach Jack Ross.
"I’ve tried to sign him a couple of times already so my admiration for him as a player is obvious. He fits the profile in terms of what we are looking for.
"We wanted to bring another attack-minded player to the middle of the pitch. We also wanted to bring that increased athleticism and technique so he ticks so many boxes. I’m absolutely thrilled to bring him here.
"We want to get him playing, scoring and setting up goals for Dundee United and back into the international set-up. It’s a good statement for us and this is the calibre of player we’ve been trying to recruit."
