Jamie McGrath has revealed how James McClean helped convince him that Wigan was his best move in the January transfer window.
The in-demand Republic of Ireland international completed his switch from St Mirren just before Monday’s deadline passed, penning a two-and-a-half year deal.
And along with Irish international team-mates McClean and Will Keane, he will play a leading role in high-flying Wigan’s promotion push from League One.
McGrath, 25, scored 20 goals in 79 appearances for St Mirren since joining from Dundalk two years ago.
That form saw him break into Stephen Kenny’s Ireland squad last summer and the attacking midfielder has become an important player.
And the Meathman is hoping to make an immediate impact at Wigan too.
“I’ll give my all for the shirt and hopefully provide a bit of quality as well with goals and assists. The baseline is hard work and to see where that takes us,” he told Wigan TV.
“I’m absolutely over the moon. It was a bit late on Monday night but I’m delighted to get the deal done and I’m delighted to be a Wigan Athletic player.
“I’m really looking forward to what is ahead. It was a bit of a stress but thankfully it’s done and I can look forward to the future.
“I’m delighted to be here and hopefully I can contribute and help the team as best as we can.
“I spoke to Leam Richardson (Wigan boss) on the phone numerous times and got a very good impression from what he was saying.
“ I’ve watched a few of the games so I know what the team is about so I’m looking forward to getting my boots on and getting ready to hit the ground running.”
And Ireland stalwart McClean played a leading role in helping McGrath to settle on Wigan considering there was also interest in Scotland from Hibs and Aberdeen.
McGrath said: “Growing up, James was one of the main men when me and all my mates used to go and watch.
“ ‘Jimmy’ has been brilliant with me coming here, I rang him a few times and he rang me, and I also know Will from the summer.
“They are both top lads and have already made me feel welcome from the get go. It helps massively when you know a few players.
“And by all accounts, it’s a great dressing room and the boys seem top drawer. They’ve really welcomed me in and I cannot wait to get the boots on and get going.”
