Jamie Jones-Buchanan said he remains in the dark about Leeds Rhinos’ plans for a new permanent head coach amid speculation that an appointment is imminent. Jones-Buchanan has been in interim charge during the past three games since Richard Agar stepped down last month after admitting the players were no longer responding to his methods.
The legendary former second-rower, who spent 20 seasons playing in the blue and amber jersey, put in a much-improved display during Thursday’s dramatic 20-20 at home to Huddersfield Giants. Jones-Buchanan was asked afterwards about the latest on Gary Hetherington’s search for Agar’s successor, with the Headingley chief executive having spent time in Australia recently speaking to candidates.
It is understood that Hetherington is aiming to make announcement on the new man next week, but Jones-Buchanan said he was unware of any development. “I had a sit-down with Gary yesterday (Thursday) and he keeps his cards close to his chest,” said Jones-Buchanan.
“That’s what CEOs do and what they have got to do. We’re trying to impress upon the team a fair bit in terms of values and hard work and it’s important we keep doing that. When he makes his announcement, he makes his announcement and I’ll deal with it. Until then, I’ll keep always positive and going in the right direction.”
