Jamie Carragher has continued to revel in Liverpool’s thrashing of Manchester United by hijacking TV coverage of the Champions League to gloat in front of Peter Schmeichel.
Carragher was at Anfield on Sunday night to witness Liverpool ’s stunning demolition of United in the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s side put seven goals past their rivals in a record win which is still being digested in Manchester.
He greatly enjoyed winding up his commentary colleague Gary Neville on the night and is still yet to come down off the high. On Tuesday evening he was in the CBS Sports studio to provide punditry for Chelsea ’s win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
Former United goalkeeper Schmeichel was at Stamford Bridge and Carragher could not resist the opportunity to rub his face in it. With a can of 7UP on the desk in front of him, he proceeded to ask questions containing the number seven about the match at Stamford Bridge, Jude Bellingham ’s price tag and AC Milan’s history in the Champions League.
Schmeichel avoided the insinuation before eventually giving in, to much laughter from Carragher and Micah Richards. “Aren’t we seven points ahead of you?” Schmeichel responded.
“Well, well done Jamie. I give that one night or whatever. It wasn’t great for me, I have to say that. It wasn’t great.
“I’ve been trying to make sense of this since then. I still have no idea how that can happen, because it shouldn’t happen. I think [Erik] ten Hag has said it – it was embarrassing, it was unprofessional and it can never happen again. So I hope he’s right and I hope he gets things right.”
Carragher then shot back: “Peter, you’ve just called him ‘Ten Hag’. It’s actually ‘Seven Hag!’”
The former Liverpool defender has been very active on social media over the past few days, with Schmeichel following Neville in being picked on. On Monday, Carragher changed his Twitter profile picture to a miserable-looking Neville at Anfield. He then claimed that Neville had “cried off” appearing on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme in which the duo pick over the weekend’s action.
Carragher has been drawing out the celebrations after the win left Liverpool in fifth place, just three points behind Tottenham in fourth with a game in hand. "When you win by a shock scoreline it almost knocks a bit of the celebration because Manchester United become the story more,” he said on Sky Sports on Sunday.
"Klopp didn't fist pump the Kop as you'd expect because, I think, of the scoreline and it feels like you're rubbing it in.
"It gives Liverpool a huge boost in terms of getting in the top four. It's really important in terms of what they could do in the summer financially and maybe a player they could bring in.”
