Jamie Carragher takes swipe at Peter Schmeichel and Man Utd with Arsenal Champions League claim

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has joked that Arsenal have a higher chance of winning this season's UEFA Champions League than Manchester United.

The Gunners failed to qualify for any European competition last season, the first time they have failed to do so in 25 years.

United finished second in the Premier League last term but have struggled in this campaign, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked as head coach back in November.

Ralf Rangnick's side have won just one of their last four outings but Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel claimed on Tuesday that his former club can still lift the Champions League trophy in May.

When former Manchester City defender Micah Richards asked if United could win the European prize, Schmeichel told CBS Sports: "Yes. What kind of a question is that?"

Now, Carragher has joked that the Danish icon's claim was wide of the mark, saying: "I'll tell you what though: Arsenal have got more chance [of winning the Champions League] than Manchester United."

Despite the Sky Sports pundit's joke, Mikel Arteta and Co will be hoping that they can finish in the top four this season and be amongst Europe's elite again next term.

Arteta has previously made it no secret of his desire to end the club's five-year Champions League hiatus.

Speaking during a press conference back in September, the Spaniard said: "It hurts a lot in the last few days to put TV on and see those teams there, and not see Arsenal there.

"It was painful. One hundred per cent. I don't want to be sitting there with Arsenal out of those competitions."
