Jamie Carragher has reacted to Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo’s seemingly awkward greeting when the pair met up for Portugal ahead of the World Cup.
It was the first recorded interaction between a Manchester United player and Ronaldo since Sunday’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan. Many deemed Fernandes to be acting coldly towards the 37-year-old after his criticism of the club.
Diogo Dalot is also another United star set to represent Portugal in Qatar although any encounter with Ronaldo has not yet been seen. Carragher spoke out about Ronaldo’s comments on Monday, and on Tuesday he reposted a docked image of his ‘awkward’ handshake with then-Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard earlier this season.

The ex-Liverpool duo’s end-of-interview interaction did the rounds on social media this year, with many poking fun at the sheepish looks between the two friends. Carragher saw the funny side at the time and has now used the still image again, super-imposing the faces of Ronaldo and Fernandes onto the photo on Twitter.
Speaking about the interaction between Ronaldo and Fernandes, Portugal teammate Joao Mario played it off as banter. Speaking to the press, he explained: "It was a joke between them.
“Bruno Fernandes was one of the last to arrive. Cristiano asked: 'Did you come by boat?' There is no problem between them." Carragher was not so jovial about Ronaldo though, calling the timing of the release of his interview with Morgan as “bizarre” and “bang out of order”.
He told Sky Sports: "I’m not sure where this disrespect comes from Erik ten Hag, I don’t get it at all. I think he’s disrespecting Man United and Erik ten Hag.
“It was always going to end like this, he couldn’t be a sub - which I admire, he’s got that drive and that’s what makes him the great player he is - but it was always going to happen and blow up in United’s face and it was a massive mistake to bring him in the first place."
