Jamie Carragher reveals candid Steven Gerrard chat as he makes admission over coaching future

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher admits he's unsure where Steven Gerrard goes next after his unceremonious stint at Aston Villa came to screeching halt.

The pair remain close friends but the Sky Sports pundit concedes his 11 months in Midlands didn't work after the leap following three-and-a-half years with Rangers. Carragher has revealed Gerrard was under no illusions over the pressure he was under before Thursday's 3-0 trouncing at the hands of Fulham which sparked his hasty exit after brutal fan chants from irate travelling supporters.

And the 44-year-old doesn't know what comes next for Gerrard after he failed to build on his exploits at Ibrox in the Premier League. Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I’m really not sure if Stevie would go back in or wait 12 months. I spoke to him a few days ago about the upcoming games and he’s not daft, he knows the situation.

“It will be really interesting. That’s not what I have spoken to him about, whether he wants to be a manager for the next 20 years or he will pick certain jobs that will appeal to him. I think that is what he has done with his jobs that he has picked. Whether Stevie would drop down to the Championship I am really not sure.”

And while Carragher retains sympathy towards his close friend he admits the chastening experience at Villa is the risks that come with top-flight management.

He added: “But when you go into management, you know the price on the ticket – and if results are not right or whether the players are letting you down or not performing, it is the manager that carries the can. That is always the case and that is the brutal part of football management.”
