Jamie Carragher brought up Gary Neville’s record as Salford City chief executive in a brutal swipe at his Sky Sports colleague during an argument on Twitter about Antonio Conte.
Carragher and Neville became embroiled in a spat following Conte’s remarkable rant against his own club and players on Saturday night. Conte branded his players “selfish” and claimed there was a rotten culture at Tottenham after they were held to a 3-3 draw by Southampton.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher wrote on Twitter : “Conte wants to be sacked in this international break. Spurs should just put him out of his misery and do it tonight.” But Neville had a very different take on the situation with the two pundits then getting into a lengthy argument on Twitter over the situation.
Carragher decided to make things personal during the row, bringing up Neville’s involvement in League Two side Salford City. Neville worked part-time as the club’s chief executive for eight years before stepping down in October.
Here is how the argument unfolded:
Neville : “Many saying Conte should go this morning. I’d keep him right where he is and make him do his job.”
Carragher : “Why didn’t you do that with Richie Welllens after he criticised Salford & the players in public!!”
Neville : “Errrr Conte and Spurs can finish top 4 . We couldn’t !”
Carragher replied with a picture of the League Two table, which showed Salford in ninth place, six points off the play-offs. He added with a laughing emoji: “Yes you could, and he had won a cup final the week before”.
Neville : “Conte is in 4th place we were in free fall 6 points off play offs in 9th with largest budget in league! I do know I was watching.”
Carragher : “And you used to criticise Ed Woodward”.
Neville : “I did ! Ran Salford for 8 seasons ! 4 promotions and one Wembley win! Not a bad record”.
Carragher : “So why have you been asked to step down this season?”
Neville : “Three seasons only one trophy. We have standards. 10 years without a league United!”
Carragher : “Battering Man Utd to win an argument with me about Salford & Ed Woodward”.
Neville : “You don’t make sense”.
That exchange came after another which started when Neville was asked by a fan if he remembered when Micah Richards and Carragher “slated you and United for not wanting ‘the winner’ Antonio Conte”.
Neville replied: “Oh I do I do.” Carragher responded: “Yes you’d rather have kept that serial winner Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer]! Then you wanted Poch [Mauricio Pochettino] not ETH [Erik ten Hag], I told you ETH was the better choice but you wouldn’t listen.”
HAVE YOUR SAY! Who's side of the argument are you on? Comment below.
Neville shot back: “Oh but we would have had what you and loads of United fans wanted. By the way ETH is fantastic but Poch is a great manager and would have been a lot better for United than your choice !!!”
Neville was asked by a fan if he thought Pochettino would have been a better fit for United than Ten Hag. He replied: “We don’t know. He would have done a good job I’m sure of that. However ETH has done brilliantly . Either were good fits. Conte was never a fit for United.”
Carragher jumped on it, saying: “So why did you champion the appointment of Jose [Mourinho]? And argue he wasn’t supported after spending 100’s millions & attacking the club?? They are exactly the same type of managers!”
Neville finished with: “And after that experience I didn’t want to go there again! Even though he won trophies!! You did . For the worst United takes we need to look at yours on [Marcus] Rashford , [Lisandro] Martinez and Conte!!”
