Jamie Carragher defends Mason Mount following criticism amid major Chelsea and England claim

Chelsea star Mason Mount has been the subject of heavy criticism at times this season but he has been one of the standout performers under Graham Potter.

Mount has registered eight goal contributions in 21 appearances and will now head out to Qatar for the World Cup after being included in Gareth Southgate's England squad. The Three Lions have struggled ahead of the tournament and Southgate has been unable to select Mount's Chelsea teammates Reece James and Ben Chilwell after both defenders continue to struggle with injury.

The England international may not have started the season well, but his performances throughout October proved he still is one of the best players at the club and he will be a crucial asset for England at the World Cup. Potter has previously defended Mount after he came under criticism for his performances, whilst the 23-year-old himself has spoken out about poor performances and results of late.

Speaking ahead of the tournament in Qatar on Sky Sports' World Cup preview show, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp discussed the England squad selection, with the former Liverpool defender leaping to the defence on Chelsea star Mason Mount. Carragher said: "People question Mason Mount possibly because he’s not as easy on the eye as other players.

"But every manager picks him, Chelsea or England, he’s a clever footballer who understands the other side of the game and I think he can do a job and make sure England don’t get counter-attacked on."

Mount will be free to focus on his football at the World Cup after talks over a contract renewal at Stamford Bridge have now been paused until he returns to Cobham. The 23-year-old's current deal runs out in 2024 leaving just 18 months left on his contract with Todd Boehly keen to tie Mount down to a bumper new deal to reflect his importance and ability.

The England international is a consistent performer regardless of the changes in the dugout at Stamford Bridge, whilst he continues to offer a unique quality at international level and is seemingly a favourite under Southgate.
